Behold the mysterious new button on the Nintendo Switch 2

Ahead of the announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2, rumors swirled that the new handheld would feature a C-button — a throwback to Nintendo days of yore when a C-button routinely appeared on controllers for consoles like the N64 and the GameCube. Today, Nintendo did reveal the Switch 2 with a new button on the right joycon… but not much more.

The button doesn’t have a “C” labeling it like the previous controllers did. The video didn’t explain what the button does — rumor has it the button opens an in-game text or video chat system. Presumably, the company will reveal the answer at the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct in April. For now, though, we only have a little square to fuel fan theories further.

Which, in its own way, is a classic Nintendo move. With all due respect to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, it’s been a long time since a console launch felt fun. Nintendo, however, gets that half the magic is kept in the anticipation. Is that an open-world Mario Kart? Is the new Joycon a mouse? What the hell does the “maybe a C-button” do?

At Polygon, we can’t wait to share the answers as we learn them. But for now, let’s enjoy the mystery and have some fun speculating in the comments.
