Expelling Russia’s ambassador to Australia is “on the table”, foreign affairs minister Penny Wong has warned, as the federal government scrambles to verify reports that Melbourne man Oscar Jenkins had been killed after being captured by Russian forces while fighting for Ukraine.
Wong said the government held “grave concerns” for the welfare of the 32-year-old Australian citizen, after reports overnight that he had died. Senior members of the Coalition opposition have called for Russia’s ambassador to be expelled and Australia’s ambassador to Moscow to be recalled; Wong said the government was considering all options.
