Sometimes, a small change can have a big impact. The perfect example of this is a Helldivers 2 mod by lololy100, which has a succinct description: “Scavengers, Bile Spitters and Pouncers say ‘Yippee’ every now and then. They are just very happy to see you!” This mod, inspired by a similar mod for Lethal Company, makes the battlefield much more whimsical. Here’s what it looks (and sounds) like in action:
I’m a known Terminid hater; the Stalker has sent me into a complete tizzy. But hearing the little “yippee!” from these guys melts my heart. The mod was later updated to give the towering Bile Titan the same noise, which is great — I’m terrified of the massive Bile Titans and their hooked limbs, but who could hate a lumbering creature on the horizon who’s so excited to see you that he gives a little “yippee!”? Not me, that’s for sure.
Right now, the Helldivers 2 player base are still battling back the squid-like Illuminate as they perform hit-and-run attacks across the southern galaxy, while the Terminids are brewing a mysterious menace behind a shield of spores. In the most recent Major Order, players fought back the Automatons, who have no such mod, and so I feel no pity for them. In the mod description, lololy100 reminds you to install mods at your own risk. Helldivers 2 is a multiplayer game that doesn’t support the same mod scene as a big single-player title, but the game is popular enough that it’s gathered a community of players tweaking audio levels, swapping models, and customizing the game in other cosmetic ways.
