Resident Evil director takes on George R.R. Martin in first look at In the Lost Lands

Dave Bautista uses a two-headed snake as a long-range weapon in the first trailer for his new movie, In the Lost Lands, a post-apocalyptic action-adventure flick from director Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil, Monster Hunter). And because Anderson is helming the new CGI-filled spectacle, Milla Jovovich is also in this.

Jovovich costars in In the Lost Lands as Gray Alys, a “powerful and feared sorceress” who is tasked with venturing into the wastelands in search of a magical power. Bautista’s Boyce, a survivalist drifter for hire, “must outwit and outfight man and demon,” according to the movie’s official description. And — spoiler alert — he’ll have at least one bicephalous serpent in his bag of tricks for this mission.

Adding to the curiosity and intrigue of In the Lost Lands is the involvement of George R.R. Martin. The movie is based on a short fantasy story of the same name he published in 1982 — a long, long time ago, so don’t harass him about finishing The Winds of Winter just because his name’s attached to this one.

Martin said back in 2023 that he’d always wanted to write multiple Gray Alys stories, but “for whatever reason” he never finished the second one. “I did begin one, long ago,” Martin wrote on his blog. “Got two pages, I think, then set it aside, and never returned to it). Why? Damned if I know. It was a long time ago. I always liked the character, though.”

But if In the Lost Lands’ first trailer has you itching for more Gray Alys, Martin said he’s open to revisiting the character.

“We are also hoping to do a tie-in graphic novel, which will include both my original story (quite short, at 6,000 words or so) and the larger, darker, more expansive world of the film,” Martin wrote two years ago. “And who knows? If the gods are good, and In the Lost Lands turns out to be a hit, maybe we’ll get to tell the further adventures of Gray Alys after all.” OK, maybe you can badger George about finishing the next A Song of Ice and Fire book, just a little bit.

In the Lost Lands comes to movie theaters on March 7.
